IPL 2019: Who are the favorites?

What an IPL this has been so far. Each match full of sixes, fours, brilliant fielding, and I must admit some breath-taking catches that has made it difficult to sit still when viewing from my living-room. At this point of time, in this illustrious T20 tournament, each team has played 12 games. Delhi Capitals (formerly known as Delhi Daredevils) tops the table rankings at number 1. All thanks to their dynamic opener Shikhar Dhawan who has made 451 runs thus far at an impressive strike rate of 137.08. His magic alongside the ever-so talented wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant (who unfortunately wasn’t named in India’s 15 man squad for 2019 World Cup) has tallied 343 runs at a world-wind strike rate of 161.03. In any form of cricket, a wicket taking strike bowler is a must, and South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been the sensation for the Delhi Capitals, snapping 25 wickets at a descent economy of 7.82 runs per over.

There is no surprise that MS Dhoni is the leading run scorer for his team with 314 runs at a good strike-rate of 137.11. Age doesn’t seem to be holding the champion wicket-keeper batsman back, as he has done what he has usually done over the last 15 years.

Current IPL Champions 2018 Chennai Super Kings are placed second on the standings and are only separated from first place by a fraction of net run-rate. There is no surprise that MS Dhoni is the leading run scorer for his team with 314 runs at a good strike-rate of 137.11. Age doesn’t seem to be holding the champion wicket-keeper batsman back, as he has done what he has usually done over the last 15 years. Whether it be in the IPL or playing at the International level for India. Imran Tahir, the South African leg-spinner has been the star for them with the ball this season with 17 wickets at a Scrooge-like economy of 6.50 runs per over. At 39 years old, it seems that age is merely a number.

Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad are third and fourth respectively in the points table. With the play-offs approaching, once again the Royal Challengers of Bangalore are on the verge of elimination after a disappointing 2019 season. They lost their first 6 games and once again had to play catch-up. Despite winning four games in a row, they are placed last on the points table and can only reach a maximum of 12 points even if they win their last two games in the preliminary stages. Their camp has a lot of thinking to do come next season 2020. Kolkota Knight Riders are on the verge too of being eliminated unless they win their set of remaining matches. If they happen to win their last two games, net run-rate will be to their advantage. They would also need to depend on the results of other teams to have a chance of reaching the knock-out stages.

In terms of favorites for this year’s IPL, I would have to say Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings are looking really good. Statistics does not lie and if we go based on records of the past, it definitely favors Chennai Super Kings as they have had the title on three previous occasions (also current IPL champions). This glorious game of cricket is full of uncertainties nevertheless and it all boils down to which team plays the better cricket on the day. May the best team win come the final on the Sunday May the 12th. Cheers!
